UKCA (UK Conformity Assessed) is a conformity marking — the Great Britain counterpart of the CE marking, and it follows the same logic: a marking backed by a declaration of conformity and technical file, not a certificate in itself. Our CE page covers the full anatomy of that arrangement; this page covers what is specific to the United Kingdom. For static cryogenic pressure vessels, the legislation in question is the Pressure Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 as amended — Great Britain’s retained version of the EU pressure equipment rules described on our PED page.
Where UKCA came from
UKCA was introduced after the United Kingdom left the European Union. EU product directives and regulations were carried over into GB law as retained legislation, with EU institutions replaced by GB equivalents: notified bodies became Approved Bodies designated by the UK government, the EU declaration of conformity became a UK declaration of conformity, and the CE marking became the UKCA marking. The technical substance — hazard categories, essential safety requirements, conformity assessment modules — remained closely aligned with the EU framework, and designated standards used in Great Britain largely mirror the harmonised EN standards, such as those in the EN 13445 family.
The current recognition policy: CE still works in Great Britain
The practical significance of UKCA is currently limited by a deliberate policy choice. The UK government has legislated for continued recognition of CE marking on the Great Britain market for most categories of goods, including pressure equipment under the Pressure Equipment (Safety) Regulations. Under this arrangement a manufacturer may place CE-marked pressure equipment on the GB market without a separate UKCA assessment, and may use either marking, or both.
Two qualifications matter. First, this is the position at the time of writing; it is government policy, and policy can change. Second, the continued recognition does not cover every product sector — transportable pressure equipment, among others, follows its own sector-specific rules, described below. For any UK-bound order, the applicable marking route is checked against the current gov.uk guidance before production, not assumed from a page like this one.
UKCA, CE and UKNI in Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland follows EU product rules for goods placed on its market. Pressure equipment for Northern Ireland is therefore CE marked in the normal way. Where conformity assessment is carried out by a UK body rather than an EU notified body, the product carries the CE marking together with the UKNI indication — a combination valid in Northern Ireland but not in the EU. For static pressure equipment sourced from Chinese manufacturers through an EU notified body, the standard CE route generally covers both Northern Ireland and Great Britain under the current recognition policy; transportable receptacles follow a separate GB regime, described below.
When a buyer may still ask for UKCA
Even with CE recognition in place, some GB buyers specify UKCA. Common reasons include internal procurement policies written before the recognition extensions, end clients or insurers who ask for the GB marking explicitly, tenders that reference the UK declaration of conformity, and a wish to be insulated from future policy change. Where UKCA is required, the conformity assessment can be arranged with a UK Approved Body for the specific model and order; this is a per-order arrangement, not a blanket property of a factory. A fast-track route also exists that allows UKCA marking on the basis of recognised EU conformity assessment, subject to the conditions in force at the time.
UK declaration of conformity and technical file
Whichever marking applies, the documentation package is similar in structure:
- a UK declaration of conformity (or EU declaration for the CE route) identifying the product, the legislation and the standards applied;
- a technical file — design calculations, drawings, material certificates, weld and NDE records, test reports;
- certificates issued by the Approved Body or notified body for the relevant conformity assessment module, where third-party involvement is required by the hazard category;
- markings and instructions in the required form and language.

Transportable pressure equipment: the GB rho marking
Cryogenic receptacles used in transport — portable tanks, dewars and gas cylinders moved under carriage rules — fall outside the Pressure Equipment (Safety) Regulations and outside the general CE recognition policy. Great Britain retained the EU transportable pressure equipment framework (see TPED) as its own law, and new transportable pressure equipment placed on the Great Britain market carries the rho marking, applied under assessment by a GB appointed body, in place of the EU pi marking. Dual marking is possible, so equipment can be assessed for both markets. The correct route for any transportable item is confirmed against the current GB carriage rules for the specific order.
UKCA support for UK-bound cryogenic equipment orders
